She The Trophy

This project was inspired by the concept of bias-cut design, explored within the context of online exhibitions, most notably All That Glitters at FIT.  From this exhibition, I drew inspiration from the “Oscar Skirt” by Marc Jacobs for Perry Ellis (1992). I  was also conducting  research on social perception of female bodybuilders, focusing on the ‘golden era’ of the 1980s. This inspired the idea of displaying the female body as a trophy. The design below shows my visual interpretation of this theme. The bodysuit is constructed from a stiff, woven, jacquard fabric, creating a sense of restriction and poise, being tailored precisely to the model’s measurements. Cut on the bias, the suit closely contours the body and extends into a dramatic front collar. The look is completed with a 12-foot train, exaggerating the trophy-like silhouette.
