The Evolution of the Female Physique: Gender, Media, and the Bodybuilding Narrative
A research based interpretation of fashion for muscular, feminine bodies, through Geoffrey Beene's 'Body as Form' approach. Directly inspired by my research on social perception of femininity through female bodybuilding (linked here).
“You mold a woman into what you perceive her as being…I imagine women in an idyllic state. I create a vision of this woman, whether she exists or not. Doesn’t every human aim for perfection? For the possibility of it?”
- Geoffrey Beene
Female bodybuilders devote themselves to the pursuit of an ideal, shaping strength with intention and discipline. Designing through that same lens of perfection is a rare and powerful privilege.
This portfolio highlights a couture, eveningwear collection, designed around the idyllic feminine, muscular physique. Directly inspired by female bodybuilders, each piece is centered around a body part that would be desired to be displayed only from a woman who is not only physically exquisite, but empowered through her strength and physique. Themes of movement, sensuality and even irony flow throughout the collection, engaging the rebellious nature of not only the sport of female bodybuilding, but the strength of the women behind it.
